Transitioning Tips & Best Practices

There can be a lot of learning curves with the Natural Hair Journey and believe me, I know it's not for everyone, but with some help and a little coaching you can make it. In this episode, I share 5 tips to help lead you on a healthy journey to healthy hair.
I know the transitioning process can be daunting especially if it's our first go-round. Yes, many naturals have tried and failed over the years because it's not easy.
Here are my five tips:
#1 Make a Decision- Hair will break if it's left in a confused state. It has to either be pressed out and worn straight or worn in a style where the hair is in uniform curls or coils. Braids, wigs, and sewing will do too!
#2 Don't be afraid of an Ends Trim- Many clients are fearful that stylist gets scissor happy, but trust me when I say GET YOUR ENDS TRIMMED. Going too long without a ends trim will cause your hair strands to split up the hair shaft. Now that is something you don't want to happen.
#3 Learn Your Hair- For newbies seeing their natural hair grow in is like learning who you are all over again. You've spent years with a chemically straighten hair and now you want you to embrace this thick stuff (YIKES). You can do it. The most important thing to know is, always use a detangling brush/comb and start at the ends of your hair working your way up to the root. Wet the hair before combing and don't be afraid of moisture.
#4 Find a Professional Natural Hair Stylist- You are not alone and you are not the only one in this process. Find someone knowledgeable about this process to help assist you in your journey.
#5 Be Patient- The goal is to ultimately have a full head of healthy Natural Hair and it won't happen overnight if you are transitioning. Love on yourself and be patient with this process.
Every Episode I dispel a hair myth and today's Myth is "Water is Bad For Natural Hair"
That will only be true if you were going swimming and did not want your hair to swell. Water is a natural's best friend. Hair is more manageable when wet and stretched 50% its length. When natural hair is wet is causes the hair cuticles to open allowing you to infuse oils and herbal treatments.
